What you should know about Discovery School
The Board comprises an elected group of five parents, the Principal and a staff representative. T he Board of Trustees received the confirmed Education Review Office report which is very positive and an excellent result. A strong focus on values, key competencies and other curriculum areas contributes to parents being well informed about students’ holistic learning and development. Our Holiday Programmes focus on giving children aged between 5 and 13 the opportunity to do things they enjoy in a safe, supportive and encouraging environment.
This year we are looking forward to celebrating Matariki the M ori New Year and supporting the Kapo Kapo kapa haka group once again as well as planning other fun and exciting activities that help us celebrate te ao M ori. We are passionate about creating the very best learning environment for all of our students. As such we encourage you to make a time to come and meet with Carmen Jennings, our Principal and share with her your child's needs and your hopes for your child's education. We currently operate an enrolment scheme which means children must live in our school zone in order for enrolments to be accepted. Something that we emphasize with the children and we hope that everyone who is a part of the school, including parents and caregivers, feels in a real way. Our curriculum is designed to emphasize reading, writing and visual literacy as well as develop strong numeracy skills, particularly in the Junior School years 1 2 . Within the school, our teachers provide learning environments that are bright, interesting and stimulating school needs to be a great place to be. Complete the Enrolment Form, which can be either downloaded from the school website or collected from the school office.
For all New Entrant enrolments the school appreciates if all procedures are completed at least 6 weeks prior to starting day. The pattern of visits is for the following times for two weeks prior to children starting school. While the days and times are not confirmed for any pre entry visits, it will give you some indication of how many visits are typical and probable days and times. You may decide which day, on or after their fifth birthday your child will start school. Teachers will make a time to guide you through how your child has settled into their learning after their 6 week check, by making an appointment time to meet with you. The placement of students is dependent on roll numbers within each year group.
Other classes throughout our school tend to be composite classes, that is two year levels are combined. Students who have completed 2 full years by 1st January will be promoted to Year 3. Once children have completed a year in Year 3 they are then promoted to Year 4 and are usually advanced to a new class each following year. We need to work together to ensure that Discovery School provides the most effective learning environment possible for our children. We welcome parents and seek to develop a positive working relationship with them.
Other staff development areas this year include, writing, Information and Communications Technology ICT and the further development in our approach to inquiry learning
